Exotic Rochester

Hello friends and readers.  I write to you from the waiting room of a pediatric ICU at Mayo Clinic.  My youngest son has been developing diabetes without permission (bad joke, but my husband is diabetic so if he doesn't mind, you can't either) and went into ketoacidosis.  Very serious stuff.  We got to ride in a helicopter to get here, but sadly Ben missed it due to being asleep.  That's ok.  He needs rest.

He's resting comfortably and I'm holding up ok.  Had a scare when his lung collapsed but it's back to where it should be.  We'll be in the PICU for a day or two more.  I'll update occasionally and I'm taking notes with which to bore everyone when we get home.

We appreciate any support, prayers, happy thoughts, etc you can spare.

Kate

Wow, I guess sending you candy pictures wouldn't exactly be appropriate under the circumstances, now would it? My best healing vibes are on their way to your family instead, and good wishes.

Thank you, Chris. We appreciate it. Just send pictures of sugar-free candy. ;)

OMG, I'm so sorry to hear this and am glad things have stabilized, but that must have been scary and nerve-wracking. Make sure you're taking care of yourself too, and I'm sending positive thoughts your way. Keep us posted!

Thanks, Angela. Yesterday was the worst so far. I think that's because I finally had time for everything to sink in. Definitely better today though. I'll try to get another blog post in. They've given me a laptop to use so I may get online more, depending on scheduling.

My husband is diabetic too so joke is accepted. Friend has autistic son so I know some of the challenges. Gather you live in upstate NY and as to the ride - we did that too a number of years ago - medivac due to his back. He did not enjoy the ride either. My heart is with you Hospitals (except for food) can perform miracles and children are strong. You take care of yourself too please

Actually we're in Rochester, MN. I always forget there's one in NY too. But we live in WI. My husband stayed home with the other kids. The one consolation in all this is that we're in the capital of the medical world with the best possible staff. If anyone can help us make this easier on Ben, it's the Mayo staff.
