Six Sentence Sundays 5/27/12

It's been a wild week here in Kate Warren Land.  Sick husband, sick kids, storms knocking out power (for three and half hours yesterday!).  But today is Sunday and that means we all get to read wonderful snippets from authors around the internet.  Six Sentence Sundays are a wonderful thing.

Switching gears this week, I am backing up to a scene in Chapter 3.  Doug has taken all the kids to dinner at a fancy restaurant to introduce them to his girlfriend Chloe.  None of the kids [Stephanie, 23; DJ (Doug Jr.) 21; Matt and Melanie, 15 year old twins] are happy about the situation but Melanie is the only member of the family reckless enough to actually demonstrate her anger. Poor Melanie is not dealing well with the divorce, at this point she doesn't
even admit that it will happen. We join the scene as Melanie fires her first salvo against Chole:

“You used to work at a gallery?” Melanie asked.  “What do you do now? I mean, besides my dad.”
Speechless, Chloe looked at Doug, who debated how to handle the
situation. He could take Melanie aside for a private word, but she’d already scored her little victory.

That's my six for the week.  Be sure to visit all the wonderful authors who participate in Six Sentence Sunday.   Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a nap.  :)

LOL -- I love Melanie's comments. It's always great when somebody else says what everyone is thinking! Hope your family gets better soon. :)

Thanks, Donna. My youngest (she's four) came down with it in the night. She's having the worst time so far. Poor baby.

Poor Melanie! But I love that she said what she was thinking. I think dad has some work cut out for him if he's to mend bridges with his kids.

I got to give the kid credit for having the balls to say what was most likely on the mind of her siblings. Plus I'm a fan of situations that make adults uncomfortable. Very nice job!

Ha, kids always know exactly how to needle adults. Great show of how upset she is.

Kids must test the boundaries. And, it sounds like this is her way of expressing resentment, anger, jealousy. Great job in showing us her attitude and the family drama in just six sentences!

A teenager can always be relied on to say it as it is. Great six.

Ouch! This is wonderful...and kind of sad in its own way. It is reality. From what I've read so far (in other weeks' snippets) I despise Doug. I look forward to reading the book, because I suspect that at some point, he will become a sympathetic character (to a small extent) since almost all divorces have blame on both sides. Great writing, Kate. I feel so sorry for the children--especially Melanie who is unable to control her pain so she lashes out in anger.

Her opening salvo made me chuckle the first time I read it, and it just made me chuckle again. I loved Melanie but boy did I ache for her sometimes....

I love Melanie's dialogue! I remember not having a strong enough brain-mouth filter when I was a teenager too.

Oh, Kate---what a week, dear. I'm so sorry. I hope everyone is feeling better today. And that the power is holding out.

As far as your six--ouch. That's the kind of moment that makes your stomach clench, no matter who you are. But she's right--the victory's already been had. Can't wait to see how its resolved!
