Six Sentence Sundays 7/1/2012

Another Sunday, another six. Another hot day in this Wisconsin summer. I feel like I should write about winter, as if that would somehow help. Oh for central air! But anyway...

I'd like to thank all of those who read and/or comment on my Six Sentence Sunday posts, but sadly I only know you online so there will be no flowers or chocolates. Still, I appreciate you!

This week we're in Chapter 12. Handsome Dr. Henry is having dinner with his sister and brother-in-law. Rita has put phase one of her plan into action, but Henry is wise to her scheming.

"Henry forked more of the pot roast into his mouth and chewed philosophically. If he could make it through this dinner he’d be off the hook for a month or so before Rita started nagging him again. Not that he didn’t love his sister, but she could be downright exasperating. She never let go of an idea either. She was due to mention Ellen Pritchard again soon. Rita thought she was so clever, smoothly inserting her friend’s name into the conversation repeatedly."

Ah, Rita. No one's ever accused her of subtlety. That's my six for the week. By sure to visit the lovely and talented authors who make Six Sentence Sundays the joyous occasions they are!

I know exactly what you mean about wanting to write something cool in summer! Great look inside Henry's thoughts here, too.

Ah, I like this. Nice glimpse into Henry and Rita's characters. We instantly know he's used to fending off her matchmaking attempts. Well done!

Hope the storms are not too bad, hot and sunny here in SW Ont. That's ok don't need the flowers or choc. Comments and good friends are better. Oh yes, the six lol, chewed philosophicaly... must ask the spouse - he's a philosopher. And this snippet makes me glad I'm an only child :D

Sounds like the sister is trying to fix up her brother! Siblings hate each other meddling into their affairs, don't they? This is a set up for some humor!

I love the realistic quality of your writing and characters. I know without question that they're real, so I'm totally invested when I read. And hearing Henry's thoughts during dinner is a great example of that. Excellent, Kate.

Poor Henry! He needs to just give up and take Ellen out to get Rita off his back. She's a sister. She'll nag him to death until he does! *chants* Go Rita, go Rita, go Rita! Terrific six, Kate!

Nah! lol...There's no way Rita is going to let Henry off the hook for a month or more! Even if he is on to her scheming. Nice six, Kate. You paint the scene so well. I can picture them at the table. :-)

SO funny, you have to love people who feel they are the epitome of subtle, yet aren't! Enjoyed this excerpt, can't wait to read more!

Sounds like Rita would do better to shut up. She's driving him in the wrong direction.

Love the reality of their relationship. I can relate (as a sister to two older brothers). We only want what *we* think is best for them. Really! (If only my middle brother would listen to me. *sigh* He has no idea what a catch he is.)

Ah, families, without them there would be no tension, drama, or awkward moments. You've done a very good job with the creation of these two characters.

Great six, Henry is definitely wise to his sister, but I wonder how he'll react when she does mention Ellen?

This is great -- I love Rita's meddling, and her belief that she's being subtle, and I love how Henry thinks he's going to win. :)

Even the intro describes Rita to a T (putting phase one into action). I really loved how well this brother and sister knew each other and their interaction. Rita could be frustrating for Henry, but he still loves her.

Now that I'm getting to know Rita, I wish she lived near me. I want to be her friend! (And I hear you on the a/c. We went without until the temps neared 100 degrees in the house. ARGH.)
