Six Sentence Sundays 8/5/2012

It's August all of a sudden, but best of all it's Sunday, which means it's time to visit our favorite authors and read Six Sentences of their brilliance.

This week in Kate Warren Land, Ellen is breaking some sad news to her youngest.  Fifteen year old Melanie has been scheming to get her parents back together, and has just found out that her mother filed for divorce.  Ellen has just said that she knows how Melanie feels.  Melanie of course disagrees with that idea.

"You don’t know what it’s like to have your father walk out on you and your mother not care!”
          “I do care—”
“You don’t know how it feels to go from one house to another every other weekend.  To have your friends pitying you and say “Poor Lanie” all the time.  Always having people trying to make you feel better when nothing will ever be right again.  You don’t know!”

Poor girl.  I feel bad for her.

Thank you for visiting, and a double thank you to those who comment (except the spammers, they do not get any thanks, though it's nice to know they care).

You've conveyed some intense emotions in such a few words. My heart went out to Melanie.

It's amazing how much divorce does impact children. Even grown children can be devastated when their parents split up.

Poor Melanie -- but my heart goes out to Ellen. It's got to be tough having her life fall apart and still try to be strong for her kids. And all of that conveyed with dialogue. Nice!

A really emotive six here, and realistic dialogue too. No teenager ever believes that their parents might know how they feel; and I feel bad for her too.

Heartbreaking for both of them. You've captured the agony and helplessness for both of them so well.

I feel for her too. Divorce is very hard on kids. I've been in her shoes and it's tough. Great six.

I really felt for them both, and you captured a fifteen year old's emotions perfectly.

I so relate, watching a good friend go through a similar divorce with her teenagers. Well done!

I can see a pained 15-yr-old saying those words. Power, Kate, lots of power.

Excellent choice, Kate. This part is so spot on. It conveys Lanie's hurt and frustration so well. I really liked this book. :-)

A lot of raw emotion there. And as a mom, what can you say? Your child is experiencing something painfully unique to their situation. Love the emotion here.

Such a hard situation for everyone - you really captured the emotions of a teenager with this dialog - great excerpt!

Very emotional, realistic dialogue. I just spent the last school year babysitting two rather young kids whose parents got divorced a year ago, and I could tell it's been tough on them.

Powerfully written, which is part of what makes it so very sad.
